Moscow City Court sentences Yukos’ Nevzlin to life in jail
The Moscow City Court has sentenced in absentia former Yukos co-owner Leonid Nevzlin to life in jail. The court found him guilty of organizing several murders and assaults.

The court also partially upheld lawsuits of plaintiffs and ordered to collect about 4.5 million rubles from Nevzlin.

The hearing was held in absentia, as Nevzlin had been naturalized and took residence in Israel.

Prosecutor Alexander Kulikov told the media they might

insist on jailing Nevzlin in Israel. Nevzlin is staying in the United States, where he has applied for a residence permit.

Lawyer Dmitry Kharitonov said they would challenge the ruling at the Russian Supreme Court.

Investigators said that Nevzlin ordered the murders of TF Fenix Director Valentina Korneyeva, Nefteyugansk administration head Vladimir Petukhov (whose bodyguard Vyacheslav Kokoshkin was injured in the attack) and driver Nikolai Fedotov of East Petroleum Handelsgas m.b.H. Manager Yevgeny Rubin. He also initiated attacks on head of the Moscow mayor’s office public relations department Olga Kostina, Rosprom Manager Viktor Kolesov, East Petroleum Handelsgas m.b.H. Manager Yevgeny Rybin and Rybin’ s bodyguards Alexei Ivanov and Yevgeny Filippov.

The Moscow City Court had earlier convicted Nevzlin’s accomplices, including Yukos security service chief Alexei Pichugin. The latter is serving life in jail.
