Thousands of people in Russia are wrongfully indicted every year, Prosecutor-GeneralYuri Chaika said on Tuesday. He was speaking at an enlarged meeting of the Prosecutor-General’ s Office collegium devoted to compensations to those charged with criminal offences without sufficient reasons.
“This is the first time the Prosecutor-General’s Office collegium is iscussing this theme. Meanwhile, the importance of this theme is great. It is violations in this sphere that may cause the greatest harm to a human being’s life and destiny,” he said. “Although last year saw a reduction in the number of persons wrongfully indicted or acquitted, and also of dropped criminal cases, the lists of those having the right to exoneration after unlawful criminal prosecution caused by sloppy investigation still contain thousands of names.”
