The area of forest fires in the Baikal region has increased 1.5 times on Monday - to 1,323 hectares. Taiga is burning in the territory of 24 districts, the regional department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry told Itar-Tass on Tuesday.
The situation is particularly difficult around large cities. Thus, 18 fires in an area of 387 hectares have been registered in the vicinity of Irkutsk.
The regional emergencies department has warned the population that the wind force is expected to increase in the most part of the territory of the Baikal area to 15-20 metres per second in the next two days.
