EU human rights commissioner to meet with Putin, Medvedev

The Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights, Thomas Hammarberg, will meet with Russia's outgoing President Vladimir Putin and president-elect Dmitry Medvedev on Friday.

Hammarberg arrived in Moscow on Thursday after a three-day visit to Russia's North Caucasus republics of Chechnya, Ingushetia and Daghestan.

Speaking about his visit to Chechnya, a mountainous province that saw two separatist wars in the 1990s and early 2000s, Hammarberg said significant progress had been made in restoring the republic's infrastructure.

However, he expressed concern over the large number of people who have gone missing in the republic.
