Russian Communist leader Gennady Zyuganov has pledged to implement a number of dramatic social reforms in case of his victory in the presidential election.

He said the minimum wage will be raised to 10,000-12,000 rubles, and the minimum pensions will grow.

budget spending must be invested in rural areas, and the financing of science, increased to 8 percent of the overall spending. Zyuganov suggested forming a special government commission for drafting and effecting a program called Children of Russia to address the problem of orphaned, runaway and homeless children.

“The struggle against crime and corruption must be stepped up. The capital punishment for the gravest crimes must be restored, support for the law enforcement agencies’ staff increased, the nation’s defenses strengthened, and social protection of the military and their families enhanced,” Zyuganov said.

As for the foreign policy section of the Communist candidate’s election platform, there is a special item devoted to the creation of a union state of Russia and Belarus.

“I would unite Russia and Belarus as early as tomorrow,” the Communist leader said.
