Sochi Olympics mascot contender cartoons to be shown in Russia
St. Petersburg animators are set to finish a cartoon series about a baby mammoth, a possible mascot for the Sochi-2014 Winter Olympics, the head of the local Olympic campaign said on Tuesday.

The team plans to create some 100 short episodes about a mammoth calf. The calf falls asleep after taking part in pre-historic, animal Olympic Games, and wakes up in the 21st century to find out that Sochi is to host Winter Olympics in 2014.

"The mammoth begins his journey to the Olympic Games from Chukotka [Russian Far East]," Dmitry Ilkovsky said, adding that the mammoth visits a number of Russian regions during his trip to Sochi.

The team of animators hopes that the series will help to promote the image of mammoth as a possible mascot for the 2014 Sochi Olympics.

The official mascot for the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics will be announced in 2011. Over 130 different contenders have been submitted so far, including animals, birds, and insects.
