Russian big business tycoon Alisher Usmanov has declared he is the one who earlier on Monday purchased the art collection put together over decades by cellist Mstislav Rostropovich and his wife, opera vocalist Galina Vishnevskaya.
“When I learned the collection is going to be auctioned, I felt the strongest urge to keep it as it is, to ensure this unique collection of fine arts artifacts should remain an integral whole,” Usmanov told the Russian news channel Vesti Plus in an interview.
“My other goal, and a far more important one, was to bring the collection back to the country where it belongs, to Russia,” he said. “It is my plan to hand over this collection to the fold of the state. I believe that experts and fine arts critics will decide how best to go about this business. I will certainly turn an attentive ear to their opinion,” Usmanov said.
