About 30,000 new HIV-infected persons were registered in Russia in January-October 2004, chief of the Russian Health Ministrys federal AIDS prevention and control center Vadim Pokrovsky said on Friday.
"In the first ten months of 2004 alone, the number of registered HIV patients grew to 300,000 from 270,000, or more than by 10%. These are official data. To get the real number of those who contracted [HIV], this figure should be multiplied at least by 3," Pokrovsky said at a press conference.
However, the most realistic figure of HIV-infected persons in Rus | Ads |  | sia is from 1 million to 1.5 million, he said.
The highest number of such people is in Moscow, the Moscow region, and St. Petersburg.
