If the situation in Abkhazia takes an illegal turn "the Russian side will have to take measures necessary for protecting its interests," said Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko.
"Judging by latest reports, supporters of presidential candidate Sergei Bagapsh have made attempts to usurp power in Sukhumi. All this is aimed at removing the current president and prime minister from office," Yakovenko said in a statement available to Interfax.
