Court orders custody of Russian scientist
The Krasnoyarsk regional court ordered taking in custody scientist Valentin Danilov on Wednesday.

Danilov, a physicist charged with treason and fraud, was under written recognizance not to leave the city during earlier court proceedings on his case, an official of the regional prosecutor’s office told Itar-Tass.

Last week, a 12-member jury found Danilov guilty of passing secret information to China.

Danilov faces 12 to 20 years in prison.

The trial is going behind closed doors.

According to materials of investigation, Danilov, who conducted at the Krasnoyarsk State University research in the interests of the Russian Defence Ministry, turned over secret results of studies to a Chinese precision machinery import-export company and to Lanzhou Institute of Physics.

He is also accused of abuse of his position as director of the Krasnoyarsk Heat Physics Centre for stealing 466,000 roubles by using false financial documents.

Danilov was arrested at the beginning of 2001 and was released under written recognizance not to leave the city in September 2003.

In December 2003, a jury found the guilt of Danilov not proven and passed an acquitting verdict.

However, the Krasnoyarsk regional prosecutor’s office appealed it.

On July 23, 2004, the Russian Supreme Court annulled the acquitting ruling and ordered a new review of Danilov’s case by a different court.
