Nizhni Tagil, a leading metallurgical and heavy industry center in the central Urals, is celebrating the 65th anniversary of the creation of Russias legendary tank, the T-34.
Uralwagonzavod works, which has since regarded the T-34 as its trademark product, manufactured more than 25,000 such tanks during the 1941-1945 Great Patriotic War, the information department of the Governor of the Sverdlovsk region told ITAR-TASS.
All in all more than 35,000 T-34s have been produced over the past 65 years, the largest | Ads |  | number of one model ever produced in history. Designers began to work on the tank in Kharkov before the Great Patriotic War and then the Kharkov designed bureau was evacuated to Nizhni Tagil.
At present, Uralwagonzavod is manufacturing T-90S tanks in series; these modern missile carrying tanks have been dubbed ⌠flying tanks.
According to experts, the T-90S is superior to the Lepard-2, Abrams and Challenger main battle tanks that are in service with the leading NATO member-countries.
It can destroy armored targets from a distance of five kilometers with the help of missiles equipped with laser homing devices. It is the lowest-silhouette tank in its class.
As regards its degree of protection, the T-90S is ten to fifteen years ahead of its foreign rivals. It can operate effectively in any part of the planet in any weather and any climate.
