A wide range of products of the Russian defence industrial complex is represented at the international exhibition of naval machinery and weapons Euronaval2004, which opened at Le Bourget near Paris on Monday.

Russia participates in it for the fourth time. Rosoboronexport is the organiser of the integrated Russian exhibition.

It showcases products and developments by 1,500 enterprises of the defence industrial complex, said Rosoboronexport general directors chief advisor Igor Gusev, who heads the Russian deleg

Enterprises of not only the customary scientific-industrial centres, above all St.Petersburg, but also other Russian regions and cities, such as Kaluga and Yekaterinburg, have brought their specimens to Le Bourget, Belousov said.

At Euronaval2004 Russia shows for the first time several tactical ship- and shore-based missile systems, as well as radioelectronic equipment - radars, control systems of missile systems and ships, he added.

Warships, including Project 956E destroyer, the Korsar corvette and middle and heavy landing vessels, missile and patrol boats are exhibited as dummies and documentation.

The Russian chief delegate made special note of the latest Project 20382 Tigr corvette, featuring the Stealth technology.

Tough competition exists in this segment and Russian enterprises have to go a long way to reach the world class, Belousov said.

In contrast, Russian missile and patrol boats are unprecedented in their type, he noted. This is due to their first-ever automatic controlled bottom spoilers, giving the boats unique hydrodynamic characteristics.

A pride of place in the Russian exhibition goes to the Zubr and Murena hovercraft landing ships. The former is already in service in Greece and the small Murena has drawn the attention of South Korea, which has ordered three of them. The first will be supplied in 2005, the Rosoboronexport spokesman said.

Russias participation in Euronaval2004 is designed to demonstrate the success of Russian ship-building.

Belousov recalled that five years ago naval machinery and weapons occupied only 14 percent of the order book of the Russian defence industrial complex. Today it is 51 percent of the total of the contracts signed, 12.8 billion dollars.
