Mr. Mordashov was born in 1965. He graduated from St. Petersburg Engineering and Economics institute with honors in 1988. In 2001, he received an MBA degree from Nortumbria University (New Castle, England).
Mr. Mordashov holds an Honorary Doctor’s degree from St. Petersburg Engineering and Economics Institute.
Mr. Mordashov has been a Severstal employee from 1988. He started as a senior economist, soon moved on to the position of the head of the economics and labor organization bureau of the mechanical-repair shop #1. Then he took on the position of the deputy head of the planning department of Severstal.
In 1992, he was appointed the Financial Director of Severstal.
From 1996 till 2002 he served as the General Director of Severstal.
Under his leadership six strategic programs were developed and successfully implemented at Severstal. They were the strategic business plan, the sales program, the program of organization and economical, and organization and technical measures, the purchasing program and the human resources development program.
In 2000, Mr. Mordashov offered leadership in diversification of the Severstal business. In the capacity of the general director of Severstal-group he now oversees the restructuring of the Severstal group with assets in steel, automotive, metal products, coal and iron mining, transportation and other industries.
In June 2002, Mr. Mordashov was elected the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal. Mr. Mordashov was among the winners of the national Career-96 and Director-97 contests. In 1998, he was named the Best CEO. In December 2000, Mr. Mordashov was named the Best Entrepreneur in the national contest The Best Company of the Russian Federation. In 2001, he was named the Most Professional Manager at the federal level in the Russian magazine’s Expert Rating Agency. Mr. Mordashov is a member of the Presidium of the Russian Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs (RUIE). He heads the working group of the RUIE that campaigns to join the World Trade Organisation, and he chairs the committee to reform customs policies. He is also a member of the Government’s Advisory Council on entrepreneurship.
Alexey Mordashov is a member of an intergovernmental Russian–German committee on the strategic relationship between the two countries. He is a regular contributor to the World Economic Forum and other international forums.
