Lipetsk city is the capital and administrative center of the Lipetsk region of Russian Federation. Lipetsk region is situated in the central part of the East European Plain. The area of the region is 24,100 sq. km. The population is 1,213,000 people which is 0.84% of the Russia’s total. Lipetsk region consists of 18 districts and 2 major cities.Other towns of the region are Gryazi, Dankov, Zadonsk, Lebedyan, Usman and Chaplygin. Though the territory of the region is small and under-populated, it has the scientific, technical and industrial potential and infrastructure.
Lipetsk stands on the banks of the Voronezh River. The population is 475,000 people. Density of population is 51.9 persons per sq. km. Lipetsk is located 508 km southeast from Moscow.

Climate
The climate in the region is temperate continental. The average temperature in January is -10C. The average tmperature in July is +20C. The biggest rivers are the Don and the Voronezh.
History
Archeological research showed that the territory of the present-day Lipetsk Oblast used to be the eastern boundary of Kievan Rus.
Lipetsk was founded in the XVIII century as a working settlement at the construction of foundry plant on Lipovka River. The plant built by the order of Peter the Great produced cannons, cannon balls and other weapons for the Russian fleet.
In 1779 Lipetsk received the status of a city. In 1803 one of the oldest spas was organized in Lipetsk.
In 1930s Lipetsk stopped being green and quiet provincial town and became an important indutrial center of the region.
Lipetsk region was founded on January 6, 1954. It incorporated parts of Voronezh, Tambov, Orel, Ryazan and Tula regions of Russia.
Economy
Lipetsk is an industrial region. Dominant industry is ferrous metallurgy. Power engineering, food industry, industry of building materials, chemical, textile are also developed.
There are 247 enterprises of different size. The industrial complex consists of 194 large enterprises, including 7 metallurgical, 53-machine building and metal-cutting. 19 enterprises manufacture building materials and 60 belong to the food-processing industry. The region produces over 15% of the country's refrigerating equipment, 14% of cast iron, 13% of tractors and 10% of steel smelting.
Lipetsk region has reserves of limestone, sand, clay, peat and timber.
The region has developed agricultural production. The area of agricultural fields is 1.9 million hectares. Grains (wheat, rye and others), sugar beet, sunflowers are grown in the region. Beef-breeding, vegetable- and fruit-growing are developed.
According to a 1995 survey by Bank Austria, the oblast is ranked 22nd among Russia's 89 regions in terms of investment climate.
Transportation
The region has the developed transport infrastructure that includes motor roads, railways, airlines and pipelines.
The basic ways of transportation in the region are railway and motor transport. Modern highways connect Lipetsk to all major destinations and with Moscow – Rostov and Moscow - Volgograd federal highways.
Lipetsk is an important railway station on the Oryol – Volgograd line.
Lipetsk region occupies advantageous geographic position as it is located on the most important transport routes. This position and considerable natural resources are major factors of social and economic development.
Culture
There are two universities and three theatres in the town.
The main places of interest are the Plekhanov Museum, the Bunin Museum, the Museum of Local Lore, the Drama Theatre, the Puppet Theatre, the Philharmonic Hall.
