General Information

Syktyvkar is the capital of the Komi Republic, one of the regions of Russia. The region is located in the north-west of Russia. The area of the region is 415.9 sq. km. The population is 1,185 thousand people.

The population of Syktyvkar is 225.8 thousand people. The city stands on the left bank of Sysola River, close to the place where Sysola merges with the larger Vychegda River, a branch of Northern Dvina. The city is located north-east of Moscow.

Climate

The climate in the region is temperate. Typically, winters are long and cold, and summers are short and relatively warm. Average temperature in January is –15°C, average temperature in July is +17°С.

History

It is believed that the first settlement at the city's present site appeared in the XVI century. Europe first learned about Komi in IX century, after traveler Ottar, a Norwegian, had visited this land following the order of Alfred the Great, the King of Britain.

Syktyvkar was founded in 1586 as the Ust-Sysolsk grave-yard. It received the status of a city in 1780. At the same time it became the center of the Ust-Sysolsk district of the Vologda Province.

In the second half of XIX century it was a place of political exile. In 1921 Ust-Sysolsk became the center of Komi Republic and in 1930 it was renamed Syktyvkar.

Economy and Transportation

The main industries of Syktyvkar are timber industry, including pulp and paper milk and two furniture factories, textile and food producing plants as well as construction facilities. Lumber and woodcrafts are the city's largest industries.

Vychegda and Sysola Rivers are navigable. It is a major transport route of forestry products from Syktyvkar.

Culture

Syktyvkar is a pleasant place to visit. The basic sights of Syktyvkar are Musical and Drama theatres, museums of Art and Local Lore and various monuments. In the intersection of the two main streets, Communist Street and October Street, there is a nice monument, and there is a beautiful church at the Michurinsky Park.

Museums of Syktyvkar include Diakonov Museum of Literature and Theatre, Local Lore Museum founded in 1911, National Gallery of Komi Republic, National Museum of Komi Republic and Geological Museum.
