Communication and Relationship in Russia

Very often those foreigners who hear about Russia from TV news and newspapers think that the country is an awful and dangerous place because of the extensive crime, extremely cold weather and economical instability. These people think they know the truth, but very often they do not. And sometimes what they know might be an exaggeration. Here we present a short list of what you should be aware of in Russia in terms of effective communication and relationship.

Home and household

1. Many women in Russia work, run a household and raise children at the same time
2. When Russians enter a home, they take off their boots and put on slippers
3. After coming home, Russians often change clothes
4. People – especially men – should take off their hats when they come into the house
5. Don’t put your feet on a table
6. Very often children, even adults, live with their parents

Hygiene

1. Wash your hands before eating
2. Some toilets might not have toilet paper so you should bring your own
3. Bring your own toiletries, because you might not be able to read the labels to buy the Russian toiletries in the shops
4. Bring an adapter for electronic devices like a hair dryer. The voltage in Russia is 220V. If you live in a hotel, you can ask for one at reception.

Food and Restaurants

1. When at home, the majority of Russians eat in the kitchen
2. If you are invited to a house party, it’s better to bring with you a small present or a cake
3. You should thank people for the food they cooked for you
4. It is not generally accepted to give tips in Russian bars and restaurants
5. Sometimes Russians do not use settings
6. The food in Russia might contain more fat than the European food
7. Snacks offered in many small cafes include hot dogs, hamburgers, sandwiches etc.
8. Many shops, cafes and kiosks offer water and chewing gum
9. Many dishes of the Russian cuisine contain meat
10. Some salads might have too much onion or garlic
11. If you are invited to a Russian house party, the hosts will offer you much food and drink.
12. Many people drink bear in public places (on public transport, on the streets etc)
13. Russians might drink a lot. The most popular drinks include beer, vodka and wine. Some Russians don’t drink at all.
14. You can refuse to drink.
15. If you are eating somewhere with your friends, each can pay for himself or somebody can propose to pay for the others
16. A man can feel offended if a woman offers to pay for his dinner

Friendship and love

1. Men great each other shaking hands
2. You should respect older people and disabled (e.g. give up your place in a bus)
3. Men may help women (open doors, carry a heavy bag, help to put on coats etc.)
4. Men may offer to pay for women
5. Boys tend to be more initiative than girls
6. Men can present flowers to women when they meet to go somewhere
7. Girls tend to get married quite early. Usually girls marry at the age of 18 to 22
8. Many Russian girls are interested in meeting foreigners and getting married
9. It’s normal to have sex before marriage
10. People in Russia sometimes are late for the meetings
11. It’s better not to be late for business meetings

Foreigners

1. There are many religions in Russia, but the Orthodox Christian Church has the majority. However, many are atheists
2. You must behave yourself in a church: don’t speak loudly, don’t take photos. To enter an Orthodox Church, women should wear a long dress and have their head and arms covered. It is better not to use make-up
3. Fees in museums and theatres are higher for foreigners
4. Always have a passport and visa with you or at least have photocopies of both
5. Never play street lotteries in Russia
6. Don’t show off your wallet and try not to bring too much cash with you
7. The police don’t speak foreign languages
8. If there is an accident on a street, people are afraid to interfere
9. There might be separate booking offices for foreigners in major railway stations and airports
10. To feel safe, you may bring baggage locks and leave your expensive jewelry at home
11. There are many currency exchange points that accept USD and Euro. Some accept some other foreign currencies
12. Most banks and exchange points are open 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. every day
13. You may bring your laptop with you. There are no general restriction to bring it for personal use
14. The most dangerous areas in Russia are Chechnia and neighboring regions
